Monastery of the Hieronymites (UNESCO WHS)

A great addition to my UNESCO WHS Collection with thanks to Catia of Portugal. She sent me this card for our UNESCO stamped swap. Monastery of the Hieronymites stands at the entrance to Lisbon Harbour – construction of which began in 1502 – exemplifies Portuguese art at its best (Ref: UNESCO site).

In wikipedia I read that the monastery withstood the Great Earthquake of 1755 without too much damage. But when the building became vacant in 1833 by the abolition of the religious orders in Portugal, it began to deteriorate to the point of almost collapsing. Interesting!

Eléctricos de Lisboa

I wanted to put these two pretty cards of Lisbon together as they are kind of alike. I really hope that one day I can make it to Lisbon and get on one of these cool yellow trams.

I received this adorable B&W card of Lisbon from Isacle (Portuguese Speaking Countries X World Tag). It is definitely one of the best cards I've ever received. Many think the same. If you check flickr or postcrosing, you'll see that this card is a favourite of quite good number of people.

The second card is from rita_simões (October RR 2009). Rita says the yellow trams give some character and color to the city of Lisbon and she is so right.
